A new hope

Decided to use Android. The FLOW project team has already ported the system successfully to the Overo platform.
Also it seems that a working solution for the libdlo DisplayLink driver is available on Android. (Yay! According to the change notes, also my eGalax touchscreen controller is supported by this specific solution)

Compiled the Linux kernel the last two days (one time the wrong branch, one time the right one ;) )
Will patch the Android checkout today and give it a first try on the Overo.

Wish me luck!

17. September 2009

  • Software First try to set up the USB display with libdlo. make check works after modifing the screen resolution to 800x600 in the test1 source file. Trying now to compile and install the displaylink-mod.

09. September 2009

  • Software Wireless is finally working! Installed wpa_supplicant for accessing my WPA-secured WLAN.
  • Software Seems that Java runs reeeeally slow on the Overo. My UI prototype is nearly unusable. Need to port it into another language. Unfortunatly I'm not that into C/C++ that this would be easy :(

08. September 2009

  • Components Picked up the touchscreen from post office. Everything seems fine with it. Gona try this out as soon as WLAN is working on the Overo.
  • Software WLAN is recognized after adding original modules from Overo-OE and the firmware files from elinux.org :-D Next step: Set up the interface.

07. September 2009

  • Software Still tinkering with "Overobuntu". Got an advice from John, which says that i need to run the modprobe-command on my merged kernel modules.
  • Components The touchscreen is available for pick up at my post office. Will get it by tomorrow :-D

01. September 2009

  • Software Installed Ubuntu on my microSD. Everything runs smooth (used the LXDE seed for building). Now trying to add WLAN drivers as discribed in a comment.

31. August 2009

  • Housing Possible found a photo frame for packing all the stuff in it: IKEA RIBBA. Exact sizes will follow.
  • Software Put Gnome for Overo on a microSD card and tried to boot it. Everything works fine, even setting up WLAN wasnt a big deal anymore (who wonders... everything is handled by a nice GUI ;-) ... Yes, I'm new to Linux :-P)

27. August 2009

  • Components The samsung display arrived today. Nice device. Almost too nice for dissasembling :( ... ;)
  • Powersupply Solution for the powersupply found through the very friendly help of an [http://www.elektrikforum.de/|elektrikforum.de] user: d.kuckenburg. Thank you very much!

See Drawings and notes for more information about the powersupply-solution.

25. August 2009

  • Software Tried to setup WLAN on the Overo. Without any success. Will try it with my own build of the OS.
  • Software Started to compile my own version of the Overo-OS. Using VirtualBox with Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro, it takes quite a long time. Also missing packages are slowing down the the buildingprocess.

24. August 2009

  • Components The complete Overo System arrived. First tests successful.

The Living Room Controller is a fully featured computer system, packed into a photo frame and ready for using in a living room.
It uses a Gumstix Overo Air computer with a 600Mhz ARM CPU and Linux running on it as plattform.
The Overo Air has built-in WLAN & bluetooth and an USB port.
A 7" USB LCD screen from Samsung is used as display. An overlayed USB touchscreen film provides the interface to the system.
